For basic file or supported-link delivery in an existing Shopify store, Shopify Digital Products is the strongest fit on app price: it is free and allows up to 50 files totaling 5 GB per variant. Choose Filemonk, Fileflare, or BIG Digital Downloads when a listed feature such as PDF watermarking, higher storage, streaming, or license-key delivery matches a real catalog need.
The third-party app prices and plan limits here are U.S. listing snapshots observed October 22, 2026, in U.S. dollars. Shopify’s free app does not include a Shopify store subscription or payment processing. Treat third-party feature descriptions as app-listing claims, not comparative performance or security test results.
Shopify digital download apps compared
The table compares each app’s free allowance, listed paid plans, and a distinguishing capability. Prices are U.S.-dollar listing snapshots; recurring and usage-based charges are stated as billed every 30 days. Fileflare also lists annual prices for its paid plans.

Choose by file size, protection, and delivery needs
For a basic Shopify catalog, start with Shopify Digital Products
If you already sell through Shopify and need to deliver a PDF, ebook, graphic, or another file, the free Shopify app covers the core job. It can also attach a link from a supported provider, such as Google Drive, Dropbox, Canva, YouTube, Vimeo, or Figma. The app accepts links only from supported providers, not arbitrary websites.
For larger files, compare the app’s storage ceiling with your catalog
Shopify Digital Products permits up to 50 files totaling 5 GB on each variant, and Shopify states that downloads have no bandwidth limit. Uploading a file from the Shopify product page instead has a separate limit of 500 MB per file. Those are different upload routes, so check where you are adding the file before treating a failed upload as an app-wide restriction.
For a small catalog, Filemonk’s free plan lists 250 MB and 50 monthly orders, while BIG’s free plan lists 250 MB and 50 orders. Fileflare lists 1 GB of free storage and unlimited download bandwidth. The paid plans then diverge: Filemonk Lite lists 10 GB, Fileflare lists 50 GB on Basic and up to 1 TB on Premium, and BIG lists 15 GB on Starter up to 1 TB on Growth, with plan-specific bandwidth limits. Check the precise tier against expected file volume and download traffic rather than relying on a broad unlimited claim.
For watermarking or license keys, use a plan that lists the control
Filemonk Lite lists PDF watermarking, download limits, and refund or fraud checks. Fileflare lists PDF stamping on paid tiers, with fraud blocking on Growth and IP limits on Premium. BIG lists PDF stamping and license keys, with storage and bandwidth quotas that vary by plan. These listing descriptions can help narrow the choice, but they do not establish that a downloaded file cannot be copied or that any app guarantees fraud prevention.
For a branded or on-page download experience, compare delivery routes
Shopify’s app sends an email link automatically after successful payment by default. A download button on the Thank you or Order status page requires adding the Digital Products block in the checkout editor; those page links are unavailable on development stores and stores with paused or inactive plans. Filemonk lists Thank You page downloads on Lite, while Fileflare lists checkout and customer-account delivery options. Compare the buyer-facing route you need, not just the number of files a plan can hold.
Files and hosted links behave differently
A file uploaded to Shopify gives the customer a copy to download. A hosted link leaves the content with its supported provider, where the merchant manages sign-in and sharing permissions. Shopify does not monitor the destination: if it is moved, deleted, or made private, a buyer can still receive a link that leads to an error page.
Shopify access limits restrict how many times a customer can download files or open a link. All files in a variant share one count, while each link has its own count. A share link is different: it is not tied to a customer or order, does not expire, and can be used by anyone who has it up to its limit. Neither an access cap nor a share link prevents someone from copying a file after downloading it.
Before replacing an asset, account for customers who already purchased it. Their existing download links can continue to work after a file or link is edited or removed. Replacing a file with one that has the same filename makes existing file links deliver the replacement; changing the filename can leave earlier links pointing to the original asset. For hosted content, update the material at the provider while keeping the same URL if existing buyers should reach it.
Set up Shopify Digital Products and verify delivery
Shopify’s documented desktop workflow is to create or select the product, install Digital Products, attach an asset, and test the customer flow. For a digital-only item, deactivate Physical product in the product’s Shipping section and save. A product that includes a physical item still follows shipping and fulfillment settings for that item.
1. Create or select the product
In Shopify admin, open Products, choose an existing item or create one, and save its details. For a digital-only product, deactivate Physical product in Shipping. If the item has variants, check the setting on the variant you intend to sell.
2. Install the Shopify app
Go to Settings > Apps > Shopify App Store, search for Digital Products, select the Shopify app, and install it. After installation, open it from Apps > Digital Products.
3. Attach the file and review variant settings
In Apps > Digital Products, open the product, choose Add an asset > File, upload the file, review its variant’s delivery and access settings, and save. The defaults are Send automatically and Unlimited access. To cap downloads or link opens, choose a limited access setting for the relevant variant.
4. Test the order and turn test mode off
Shopify’s test-order workflow uses a payment gateway in test mode and requires a paid Shopify plan. Place a storefront test order with the gateway’s test payment details, inspect the order and customer notification, and confirm that the download link works. Test mode prevents live credit-card orders, so deactivate it as soon as the test is complete.
Common download-app decisions for Shopify merchants
A PDF upload failure depends on the file and upload path
Shopify’s file-upload guidance lists PDF as an allowed file type on a trial plan after email verification. Separately, the Digital Products app allows up to 5 GB combined per variant, while a file uploaded from the Shopify product page is limited to 500 MB. Check email verification, file size, and upload route when troubleshooting; those general rules do not identify the cause of a particular error.
A video embedded in a Canva PDF will not play as a video
Canva says PDF exports do not support video playback or animation. A video hyperlink is clickable only in Presenter view. For a downloadable booklet, provide the video as a separate MP4 or use a hosted video link from a provider Shopify supports, with the provider’s sharing permissions set for buyers.
Order email visibility is separate from marketing permission
The Digital Products Orders section displays customer email addresses, and its order export includes email fields. That is access to order information; the app documentation does not establish permission to use an address for marketing.
Digital-product tax rules depend on the buyer’s location and seller’s obligations
Shopify places responsibility on merchants to determine whether they must collect tax and to handle registration and filing or remittance, unless an applicable automated filing service applies. Its guidance describes destination-based VAT for digital goods sold to EU customers. U.S. taxability and obligations vary by jurisdiction and merchant circumstances, so a Shopify app’s delivery settings do not settle the tax treatment.
Choose the app that matches the catalog
Choose Shopify Digital Products if you already use Shopify and need basic file or supported-link delivery within its 5 GB-per-variant limit. Choose Filemonk if its listed watermarking, download limits, or refund and fraud checks address a specific need. Consider Fileflare when its listed storage tiers, unlimited bandwidth, streaming, or scheduled releases fit your delivery volume. Consider BIG when license-key delivery or its stated storage and bandwidth tiers are the deciding requirements.
Gumroad and Payhip use a different model: their listed offers are creator storefronts with transaction-based fees, while Shopify Digital Products adds download delivery to a Shopify store and leaves its store subscription and payment processing separate. Their published fee structures do not establish a like-for-like total-cost winner for a Shopify merchant. Compare the costs that apply to your own store and sales before switching platforms.
For a basic Shopify download catalog, start with the free native app and measure the catalog against its per-variant limit. Move to a paid app when a defined requirement, such as more storage, PDF stamping, streaming, or license keys, makes that plan’s listed price worthwhile.
